Graffiti Protection of Stainless Steel

 Lamp Post Brighton (England)

Lamp post number 5 is situated on the Brighton sea front less than 50 metres from the sea and was suffering from corrosion / browning and pitting. We deep cleaned and removed all graffiti and stickers, before coating and protecting lamp post number 5 for Brighton and Hove Council in February 2009. This is a part of a long term test to see how our coatings could cope in such a harsh environment, not only from oxidisation but also graffiti. The sequence of pictures shows the cleaning, preparing, and coating process.

 Lamp post selection

We selected lamp post number 5 as it was suffering from all of the following;

Tea staining, browning, salt damage, graffiti, and stickers.

           Please Note

For this test we were not supplied with the Key Tool to open the access plate and were therefore unable to completely clean and seal this area and internal leakage may occur.

It would be our intention to remove this plate and completely seal the area on all lamp posts.

AFTER

Deep Cleanse

ERW-XL is applied and allowed to dwell for 30 min's before

re agitating.

The ERW-XL completely removes all iron stain and browning from within the grain of the stainless steel.

All graffiti and stickers are also removed during this operation by other means.

Rinsed

and

Neutralized

After the deep cleanse is complete and the steel has been fully rinsed with fresh water we apply ERW-Ph to neutralize the surface removing any trace of acid that may be present as a

result of previous cleaning products and pollution.

Coated and

Protected

Prior to applying the EPC7460A stainless steel protective coating We apply ERW-AL preparation fluid ensuring perfect adhesion.

After drying time of the initial coat additional coats of EPC7460A are applied. A total of 3 coats are applied.

The stainless steel is now protected from all the elements

                                                          10 MONTH UPDATE

In November 2009 we returned to inspect Lamp post number 5.

Easy sticker removal

When we originally cleaned and prepared the surface the sticker removal caused us major problems. We had to employ a lengthy and time consuming process using a hot air gun, a plastic scraper and some solvent, so as to remove the stickers without damaging or marking the surface of the stainless steel.

On our return we were not surprised to see that more fly stickers had been applied, however as the pictures below show their removal from the protected surface was a simple process. The sticker just lifted clean off the coated surface, only leaving a dirty out line of where it had been, which was easily removed with a wipe over.
